Eligibility Criteria:

Prospective candidates for the Master of Science (M.Sc.) in Applied Statistics program at Symbiosis Statistical Institute must fulfil the following academic requirements.

A graduate degree in Statistics and/or Mathematics as principal and/or subsidiary level from any statutory/ recognized University/Institution of National Importance with a minimum of 50% marks or equivalent grade (45% marks or equivalent grade for Scheduled Caste/ Scheduled Tribes).

Note:  B.E/B.Tech. with Mathematics/Statistics at the Subsidiary Level may also apply.

Programme Highlights

  • Prerequisite Courses:  Sequential completion of prerequisite courses is mandatory before advancing to subsequent program levels.
  • Semester III and IV Courses:  The curriculum in these semesters is specialization-specific, encompassing core and elective courses and relevant flexi courses.
  • Summer Internship :  All students undertake a 8-10 weeks Summer Internship between May-June and July following Semester II.
  • Industry Project :  An integral part of the program, the Industry Project is completed between January and April in Semester IV.
  • Non-Credit Courses:  In addition to regular credit courses, the institute offers non-credit courses, including tutorials, hands-on workshops, guest lectures, scientific colloquiums, skill development sessions, and value-added courses.
  • Credit Structure:  The allocation of theory and practical credits is contingent on the chosen specialisation.
  • Specialisation Implementation:  Specializations in Data Science, Industrial Statistics and Operations Research, Biostatistics, and Actuarial Statistics are implemented based on students' strengths, area of interests, summer project and academic ranking.
  • Indian Statistical Service (ISS):  Frequent invited sessions on the Indian Statistical Service (ISS) in our curriculum offer insights into the roles, recruitment process, and significance of statistical expertise in policy formulation. Students get exposure and learn about ISS officers' vital role in generating data for evidence-based decision-making across government sectors. These sessions highlight career prospects within the ISS, inspiring students to pursue impactful roles in public service leveraging their statistical skills.
  • Industry visits:  Institute take initiative to visit relevant industry where lot of real-time data in getting generated so that students can also get exposure about data generation and help them in interpreting the results with critical thinking.

    The best initiative like ‘Industry on Campus’ with appeal to industry domain expert to share problem statement before hand help many students to work on the real-time data and perform given activity by providing the preliminary solutions to the shared problem statement.

Admission Process

At Symbiosis Statistical Institute, we employ a comprehensive selection process to ensure the admission of candidates who meet academic standards and exhibit strong communication and analytical skills. The selection is based on the following criteria:

1. Academic Record:
  • Candidates are evaluated based on their academic performance at the graduation level.
  • A minimum of 50% marks or equivalent grade (45% marks or equivalent grade for Scheduled Caste/ Scheduled Tribes).
2. Writing Aptitude Test (WAT) and Personal Interaction (PI):
    Writing Aptitude Test (WAT):
  • A specialised written test assessing technical and academic writing skills.
  • Scheduled alongside the Personal Interaction.
    Personal Interaction (PI):
  • A comprehensive one-on-one interview with a panel of experts. PI provides a platform for candidates to showcase their capabilities and aspirations, fostering a holistic understanding of their potential.
  • Designed to understand and assess the candidate's aptitude, analytical thinking, and communication skills.
    3. Conduction of Writing Aptitude Test (WAT) and Personal Interaction (PI):
  • For admission process of AY 2024-25, WAT has been waived off.
  • Only PI will be conducted and will happen in an ONLINE mode for AY2024-25 as per scheduled mentioned under Important Dates for admission process.
  • The details of PI schedule along with meeting link will be shared near to the date of PI after registration process is complete.
  • Applicants are encouraged to prepare for Personal Interaction to present their best selves during selection.
    4. Syllabus for Writing Aptitude Test (WAT) and Personal Interaction (PI):
  • For admission process of AY 2024-25, WAT has been waived off.
  • The PI will be based on the syllabus up to BSc (Statistics).
  • More focus will be on situation specific application of Statistics
  • Applicants are encouraged to prepare for Personal Interaction to present their best selves during selection.

M.Sc. Statistics International Students

M.Sc. Statistics Important Dates
